Give $3 to Keep Artown Free

“Give $3 to Keep Artown Free” is going strong but there’s still time for you to help fund Artown's vibrant and noteworthy performances each July. If you’re heading out to Wingfield Park to enjoy a performance consider bringing a few extra bucks to drop in the donation bins. At some events, such as Movies in the Park, your donation earns you a raffle ticket for great prizes donated by University of Phoenix. They’ve already given away gift cards and limited edition DVD sets. And, this year your $3 donation becomes $6 thanks to a matching grant by the Robert S. and Dorothy J. Keyser Foundation.

You can also Give $3 at a local U.S. Bank branch and through donation envelopes in select issues of the Reno Gazette-Journal,  or donate online right now. Donations of $50 or more automatically qualify for Friends of Artown membership and all the benefits that go along with it. In 2010 your contributions raised more than $33,000! Of course, the program wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of exclusive sponsors RGJ Media and U.S. Bank as well as printing donated by JLH Inc.

Take a Journey “Beneath the Surface” with UNDERLAND

Acclaimed New York-based choreographer Stephen Petronio is set to join his dance company on stage July 30 for “UNDERLAND.” Sexy and strange, “Underland” was inspired by the tender, bitter-sweet songs of pop balladeer Nick Cave and injected with Petronio’s signature style of fast, daring movement. Dancers hurl through space with razor sharp prevision, fiercely energized one moment and sensually lyrical the next.

Petronio performs “Descent Into Underland,” the first segment of the piece. From there the dancers thrust themselves into the “Underland” or as Petronio describes it, “a kind of subconscious world beneath the surface.” In addition to a familiar soundtrack, “Underland” is spiked with costumes by fashion designer Tara Subkoff, video from artist Mike Daly and visual/lighting designer Ken Tabachnick.

Stephen Petronio’s “Underland” is July 30, 8 p.m. at Grand Sierra Resort’s Grand Theatre. Tickets are $30, $40 and $50 and available online, by phone at 800-648-3568 or in person with no service fees at the Grand Sierra Resort Box Office. This performance is suggested only for mature audiences over 18 due to language and adult themes. Sponsored by New England Foundation for Arts and Grand Sierra Resort. Photo credit Sarah Silver.

Artown + Tour De Nez

The final weekend of Artown 2011 coincides with the mighty mighty Tour De Nez so the only logical thing to do was make it a cycling and art extravaganza. It all starts Friday, July 29 at 9 p.m. for Movies in the Park featuring the classic cycling film “Breaking Away.” At 7 p.m. July 30 PopArtCycles take over Wingfield Park for a mass display of all the creations. Then Sunday, July 31 Tour De Nez gets speedy with the Criterium through downtown Reno for handcycles, then juniors and finally masters followed by kids races, the clunker classic and the PopArtCycle Parade at 12:30 p.m. Racing continues throughout the afternoon wrapping up at 4:30 p.m. with awards. At 7:30 p.m. Artown’s Closing Night festivities kick off with Playing for Change. Read more about this amazing group below. Review the complete Tour De Nez schedule online. Movies in the Park is sponsored by Tahoe TV and University of Phoenix. Closing Night is sponsored by Tour de Nez, Reno Tahoe USA and Friends of Artown. Official host hotel John Ascuaga's Nugget.

Celebrate 32 Days of Art at Closing Night

We’re all set for a party in the park at Artown Closing Night July 31 at 7:30 p.m. in Wingfield Park. Global music collective Playing For Change  brings musicians from around the world together for an inspirational live performance based on the PBS show. For four years Playing For Change traveled the world with a mobile recording studio in search of musical inspiration and sharing their recordings to unite people through music. Throughout the journey they created a family of more than 100 musicians from all walks of life that make up the Playing For Change Band.  Merging genres from blues and chamber music to African choir and rock, musicians perform familiar songs in a new, collaborative style. The evening will truly be the exclamation point on what’s been a wonderful festival! Sponsored by Tour de Nez, Reno Tahoe USA and Friends of Artown. Official host hotel John Ascuaga’s Nugget.
